Inspire Innovate 2010 ~
Expanding the way learners think: Practical “Web 2.0” skills for teachers and their students.

“Technology is better used as a tool and intellectual partner that can expand the ways that learners think -- not just try to cram his/her head with more information” (Prof. David Jonassen, eLearning Post, 2001).

With David Jonassen’s thoughts in mind this workshop is designed to show how superior online publishing tools, such as WordPress, can be used to encourage sound learning experiences and outcomes within and without the classroom. Such tools can be self-hosted by the school or region and accessed via an Intranet and/or the Internet. The same tools can also be used to set up valuable communities of practice. These links should be useful for particopants attending the workshop. They can also be found on this web page: Web 2.0 Workshop.

Inspire Innovate 2010 ~ Digital storytelling & web 2.0 skills for special needs teachers and their students.

This workshop aims to share practical steps that can be taken to implement, integrate and manage teaching and learning units with an emphasis on storytelling and expression for students with special needs. The lessons or units will incorporate the use of “Web 2.0” tools such as VoiceThread and Posterous. These links should be useful for particopants attending the workshop. They can also be found on this web page: Web 2.0 Workshop. Plus the Inpire Innovate 2010 dedicated wiki page.

Web 2.0 technologies in teaching and learning

Web 2.0 has become a key focus of research in educational technologies of late. So, we have Web 2.0…. what is this phenomenon? Web 2.0 encompasses Internet technologies such as blogging, wikis, swickis, rss feeds, tagging, folksonomy and podcasting. Web 2.0 is the second generation Internet that can facilitate collaboration and sharing between users such as teachers and learners.

The web itself has not changed. The way in which software developers design applications for the web has changed and the way people use the web as a platform has also changed. With Web 2.0 users own and control the data. There is a climate of participation. Users value add as their needs evolve. The interface is friendly. More information on Web 2.0 is located on the relevant workshop page.

Technology workshops and resources for educators

I am fortunate enough to conduct professional development workshops for teachers and academic staff in Singapore and Australia on a regular basis. The focus of these workshops is the implementation of educational technologies both in the classroom and blended learning environments.

Workshop descriptions and resources are available via the Technology menu item or by simply clicking on one of the workshop titles above. Resources and guides for teachers can be found below.
